From food prep, transportation, bear can exchange, rideshares, campsite locations, past reports, etc. The JMT is filled with current, future, and past hikers all in the same mindset more than willing to do gear shakedowns, answer the hard questions, or help with logistics.

I got my permit for the Desolation Wilderness very quickly. Just check out Recreation.gov often. It was much easier then both Cottonwood and Happy Isles. Also, if you plan to hike through it without camping, you will still need a permit but you can get it at the trailheads. It's free from what I understand.

If you are going SOBO taking Goodale pass to VVR is 10.4 miles from the JMT, then leaving following Bear Creek trail is 9 miles to the JMT. So thats 19.4 miles miles total where you are not on the JMT. The JMT along that stretch is 13.5 miles. So you add 5.9 miles by stopping at VVR and taking their shuttle to the Bear Creek trail.... This will spit you out onto the JMT around Thousand Island Lakes and will allow you to hike every mile south from there.I carry eight main stakes for the four corners, doors, and peak guyouts, and two secondary stakes for the short wall midpoints. For my main stakes, I like 6" blue Eastons and Ti hooks for the secondary stakes. If I was expecting really bad conditions or expected soft soil, I'd replace six of the eight 6" blue Easton's with 8" gold Easton's.
